Twelve p. 28, 29
- The Gettysburg Address: Jessica tries the drug twelve, and she thinks about the speech Lincoln held in 1863, called Gettysberg Address. She gets a rush that she associates with the time she read the speech. The speech is about liberty and equality, which doesn’t really make sense when she is so rich, and knows a lot of poor people.
- The drugs represent (in this context) a middle stadium between life and death. Abraham Lincoln held the speech at a graveyard, and the speech centres on the subject “Freedom”. This is a symbol of the wild, and free, youth that suddenly can be closer to death than you know of yourself.
- The speech is also used to create a contrast between the drugs/party and school. We learn that Jessica has different personalities. Both the party girl, but also the intellectual and good student. We get to know Jessica’s different personalities through the reference to the speech.

- Friedrich Nietzsche, “amor fati”:
Nietzsche is referred to on page 36 in the book. We get to know about how Mike once read about “amor fati”, witch is about accepting and loving whatever comes your way – both happiness and pain. It seems like White Mike tries to live by this philosophy. Especially regarding his mother's death and the way it has effected his life.

Dead Poets Society
Dead Poets Society is a movie about a very conservative and aristocratic academy where a new teacher comes and changes everything. His focus is upon seizing the day and experiencing real life – through poetry and through going outside the classroom.
In the book the reference to Dead Poets Society underlines the fact that the boys are from the upper class – and are dressed likewise – just as in the movie. They have to wear blue blazers and ties every day – much like Dead Poets Society. All of WM and his classmates’ time in school has been the same. This field trip is in a way their only school experience with real life – they are sort of like monkeys outside of their cages.
The relationsgips between parents and their children in Twelwe and Dead Poet's Society also resembles each other. the parents are absent and the children get to live their lifes independent of their parents.

American Beauty
Very clear reference in the fact that Rickie from American Beauty is also a drug dealer and that they make money the same way. If we look deeper there is the reference in beauty – Rickie sees beauty in everything, while White Mike thinks, “Fuck that”. White Mike only sees the Upper East Side and all of the drugs. This says something about White Mike as a person – being negative, seeing no beauty. It is a contrast that underlines White Mike’s view on New York City.
American Beauty is also about seeing the ugliness behind a beautiful surface – like with the Upper East Side and all of the drugs. New York is beautiful and happy on the surface, but in many ways ugly, criminal and unhappy in reality.
