Manhattan is located in the United States of America and is one of New York’s five boroughs. Manhattan is one of those places where all ethnicities and all different cultures meet in one big multicultural city.
History
The area that is now Manhattan was long inhabited by the Lenape Indians, and the name Manhattan derives from the Indian word Manna-hata, which means “Island of the hills” in the language of the Algonquin Indians. When the Dutch still controlled the region, Wall Street was the city limit and there was actually a wall there. |

In Manhattan you place the four directions after the location of Central Park, so for example Lower East Side is on the lower side of Central Park. Manhattan has the only official Italian American school in the U.S., La Scoula d’Italia The Empire State Building was the tallest building from 1931 to 1972 and is currently the tallest building in the city. More than 77,5% of Manhattan's households do not own a car. The largest Sunday issue of the New York Times was in 1987 – it was 1,612 pages and weighed 12 pounds. In 1638, the first homicide in NYC was registered. The killer was never found. |

Manhattan is known for it's different neighborhoods like Upper East Side, where the wealthy New Yorkers live in big apartments and townhouses, the Financial District in Midtown and Harlem which is the place where hundreds of Christians go to church every sunday. Manhattan is also home of the United Nations headquarters, and the tiny island is a major commercial, financial and cultural center of both the USA and the world.
