Charlie has been on White Mike´s mind a lot lately. They grew up together and spent much time together, as Charlie´s mother and her husband most of the time were concentrating on spending their money. White Mike was always looking forward to Charlie´s visits - but he had become more distant lately.

Normally he would pay for trips like this by using his fathers checking account, but this time it was different. The account did not have enough to cover the cost of the plane tickets, so Charlie therefore decided to pawn one of his mother’s necklaces instead.
As soon as Charlie’s mother found out that the jewellery was missing, she immediately fired the maid and filed an insurance claim. When White Mike learned this, he talked Charlie into telling his parents about what he had done. Charlie was then sent to a camp for misbehaving rich children.

He knows that the receipt for his doughnuts has the time printed on it, but it doesn't really prove anything, so he remembers the old can man, who wanted Hunter to give him some dollars, and when Hunter asked if the money was for a cab to the hospital the old man started crying and it reminded Hunter of his father.

He takes a cab to the place, where the deal is going to happen, and on his way to another beep he sees a construction site fenced off. He gets curious, walks into the site, since no one of authority is around, and sees a hole with a ladder going into it. White Mike examines the hole, but when he is ready to leave, his back-pack gets stuck on a metal pole and rips so that his bag of weed falls out and slides into the hole. He climbs down the ladder and searches in the dark for the little bag, and when he finally finds it, he quickly climbs back up. - Laura Feldman

He hurries, and when he passes the corner, he realizes that the screaming is coming from a guy called Captain. Captain's hands are covered in blood, because he has been dragging them along the stone wall, and he is yelling "I AM THE STRONGEST!" He is shirtless, which is an odd attire, considering the cold and snowy weather. White Mike gets frightened with the way Captain writhes shirtless on the snow, piss and blood-covered ground, and when Captain becomes aware of White Mike's presence, he walks towards him, yelling the words "I KNOW YOU. I AM STRONGEST. STRONGER. STRONGER. STRONGER." In the end, this makes White Mike call 911. When the paramedics ask if White Mike is alright, he assures them that he is doing fine. - Laura Feldman

In chapter 51, White Mike is walking home, when he hears a screaming coming from around the corner. Chapter 58 is only one sentence. The sentence is a quote from either Timmy or Mark Rothko, because the sentence is slang, and it is very similar to the way they (Timmy and Mark) speak. Also, we know from chapter 57 that White Mike told them to meet him at Forty-fith Street. The phrase expresses irritation.
Chapter 59 is a flashback. We are taken back to the time where White Mike was 15 years old. White Mike has acne, and therefore his mother forces him to go to a dermatologist. He is walking down fifth-avenue (to get to the dermatologist). We are told that he likes fifth-avenue and that he has a lot of observations, walking down the street looking at different people. He sees an old woman with a cat, and he thinks to himself: “I’ll never be old”.

In Chapter 60 we are back to the present tense of the book. White Mike is passing by a toy store (FAO Schwartz), and decides to go in. There are a lot of people in the store, and White Mike walks in to the bear area. He picks up a medium sized teddy bear, strokes it and then he puts it down again. He sees a little kid. The kid is looking directly at White Mike while chewing on a big teddy bear’s ear. White Mike leaves the store.

The man behind the counter shows him a card minus the picture. Mark agres to buy it. The man behind the counter takes a photo of Mark with his digital camera. ”Mark Rothko was awed by the myriad of possibilities opening like a flower in his hand (…)” when he recieved his new fake ID.
62. Jessica is sitting in her room, surrounded by her teddy-bear collection. She is thinking about 12, the drug. She is looking forward to the party where she is going to buy it from Lionel so that she can get high again. She lies in her bed fantasizing about all the strange programmes she watches on TV. At the end of the chapter Jessica is talking with her teddy-bears. It is a very strange conversation.
63. On his way home Mark Rothko is going to test his new fake ID. He goes into the Star Deli to buy cigarettes. He asks for a ”Pack of Parliaments”, but the man behind the counter asks for his ID. Jail isn’t as bad as Hunter had expected it to be. He is doing a lot of thinking in his cell because he thinks doing push-ups is too clichéd and he would look like a fool doing it anyway. He tries to remember the stuff he had learned in school. He wasn’t that scared of being in jail, because he knew he didn’t kill anyone. He knew that he was innocent. He could really use someone to talk to, anyone would do. An officer shows up later in the afternoon with Hunter’s dad on the phone. Hunter’s dad is going to try to take the first plane in the morning to come and get Hunter out of jail.
Chapter 69 (Maya)
Matt McCulloch, Hunter's dad, gets off the phone with Hunter and looks back in time when he was Hunter's age and got into trouble. He was a junior in high school and every year around Christmas the school's students would sing a carol or church song and their parents would come watch. He liked singing but one year, one day before the concert, he had gotten really drunk with some of the other students. They suddenly got the idea to make a bonfire in the woods and so they made the bonfire and sang one of the carols while jumping around the bonfire. Matt's sleeve caught fire and so does some of the other students cloths. One of the kids jacket melted onto his skin and later he died. No one of the teenagers mentioned anything about them being there and he has kept it a secret ever since.

White Mike talked about how religion in his eyes was something to hold on to for weak and lonely people. The black girl was close to tears and the teacher tried to interrupt, but White Mike just continued and said that when you go down on your knees to pray, it is just like giving God a blowjob. For that comment Mike got kicked out the ethics class.

He sat there until the crowd disperse in all directions. When he started walking home there were still crowds of all kind of people dancing in the freezing cold. Outside an expensive restaurant White Mike saw a crying lady biting her thumb. Next to her, two couples in evening clothes walked in to the restaurant. White Mike Wanted to be far away, gone from this whole city.

When he arrives at the cathedral he sits down and thinks about nothing, but of course it does not take long before his thoughts circles around Charlie again. White Mike remembers a scene from a war movie, where a soldier describes a bullet penetrating the skin of a person. He cannot help thinking about another funny scene from the movie. He ends up leaving the cathedral, angry with himself.

At the same time, Claude sits in his room surrounded by candles and does not really like the idea of the house filling up. Eventually there are almost 50 kids in the house. A girl asks Jessica if she has a number for some weed. She borrows Jessica’s cell phone and Jessica tells her to “Hit seventeen”, which is presumably a speed dial for either Lionel or White Mike.
Chapter 89 (Sigrid)
The chapter begins where chapter 87 ended. White Mike is walking out of the cathedral to get a cab. He is heading home to sleep. He thinks about why he went to the cathedral and ends up realising that it might just be one of those things that you do when times are hard. The cab stops in front of his apartment and as always he notices the cab number before leaving it. When White Mike gets inside his father is cooking lemon steak, which is something they all used to like. Including Charlie. White Mike’s beeper goes off.

She only have 500 dollars, and that is a problem because Lionel only brought a "thousand bag". The party keeps getting louder, and Sean arrives. We look back at Chris childhood and the fact that his mother forbidded him playing with matches, because their house was build of wood. White Mike is walking, heading for the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. While he is walking, he is thinking about why he is even going there. He thinks about the fact that Charlie has been shot, which in a way seems as the reason why he is going there.
Chapter 88 (Sigrid)
In the chapter we hear about how the New Year’s Eve party is slowly beginning. Jessica gets to Chris’ house early and soon the other kids arrive. They start doing shots and smoking pot.

They exchange a few words on the matter, and White Mike throws himself at Lionel to get hold of the gun. Lionel fires and hits White Mike twice. Afterword
This part is narrated by White Mike a year or more after the events. He has been operated on several times, and his wounds have healed. He lives in Paris, where he has applied to college, and he likes his new town better than his hometown, New York. Maybe because it is not home, as he says. He has a more positive outlook on life in general and seems to have put his guards down a good deal.
